Geophotos with Flickr and Google Maps

November 3rd, 2005

Geotag ExampleIn the spirit of buzzwords, I have created my first “mashup.” As I have stated before, I am addicted to Flickr. What I haven’t told you is that I am also addicted to Google Maps (GMaps). Matt brought to my attention the geophotos that he had been creating by hand. I liked the idea and being the streamlinist that I am, I told him I could make the process a lot easier.

Keep in mind this is just a rough draft to get people interested. In the future I have plans for quite a few additions, but I decided that I was far enough along to release what I have. What I have created is an extension to my Addicted To Flickr class that makes it super easy to “geotag” your photos with coordinates and display them using the Google Maps API.

The Principle

All you need to show things with the Google Maps API is the longitude and latitude coordinates. All you need to find similar photos on Flickr is a tag. Put the two together and you simply have to tag a Flickr photo with a similar tag and the longitude and latitude coordinates and you have geophoto.
