Wordpress Live Search Plugin

April 16th, 2006

This now works with Wordpress 2.6. Download and install the new plugin. Once installed, navigate to Settings > Permalinks in your Wordpress admin and click save. This generates the routes needed for the live search to work.

Well I’ve been wanting to make a live search plugin for Wordpress for quite some time and I finally had a chance last night. Feel free to try out my search form to the left to see it in action. I tried to make it as easy as possible to use.

Installation

  • Download the plugin
  • Unzip and upload the entire folder into your plugins directory
  • Login to your administration area and activate the plugin

This plugin is configured for use with the default wordpress search form. If you have changed the id attribute of the search form (searchform) or the search input box (s), this plugin will not work. If I don’t find what I’m looking for in the first few results I usually redo the search with more specific terms, so the plugin only grabs ten results.

Support

If you have any problems with the plugin, just contact me or leave a message in the comments.

Change log

  • v1.2 - Updated to fix stupid security issue that I have no idea where it came from.
  • v1.1 - Updated to work with latest versions of Wordpress (This version had security issue so be sure to download the latest with the fix applied.)
  • v1.02 - added optional close link that is in the code but commented out, no need to upgrade unless you want a close link
  • v1.01 - no need to upgrade if already working, just changed stuff for people who were having problems
  • v1.0 - initial (I may have left it as v0.1 in the plugin file)

    That’s a great plug-in. Thanks very much for taking the time to make it. Much appreciated.

    Regards

  2. Great plugin. All I had to do was activate it an it worked flawlessly within the confines of my layout and template. I Can’t think of a single flaw, this plugin is fantastic.

  3. [...] I would just like to take this opportunity to spread the word about a fantastic WordPress plugin I have begun using. The Live Search Plugin only does one thing, but it does that one thing very well. It displays a list of live search results whenever something is typed into the search field. Go ahead and give it a try by searching for a any term using the search box to the right. The behavior you are presented with is very familier for anyone who is used to using Spotlight , a search feature built-in to Mac OS X Tiger. I applaud this plugin’s creator for the excellent job he did in developing a plugin that not only works perfectly after a simple activation, but is 100% valid XHTML! [...]

    I tried it and it seems to work, but I keep on getting the “no results” message, even if I enter a search term that is in my posts. Any idea what might go wrong?

  5. @Carsten - What is your website so I can see what is going wrong?

  6. avatar Matthijs April 21st, 2006 8:06 am

    Doesn’t work for me either. Tried it on 2 sites. One with a clean install of wp, default (kubrick) theme. As soon as I start typing I get the message “no result”. I can send you the link to the site if you want.

  7. @Matthijs - Yep, send me the link and I’ll look into it.

  8. Hi John,
    my Website is http://www.flashfonic.de/blog/

    Like Matthijs, it does not seem to be the theme’s fault. I’ve got the same problem when I activate the default theme.

    Would be great if you could help…

    Thanks for an awesome plug-in. Works like a charm!!!

  12. Great plug-in - does what it says right out of the box. Well done and thanks. (BTW - seems to search my tags too, which is great)

  13. I’m also getting the ‘no results’ when the default search in wordpress returns results. How was this fixed? What was the problem?

    Thanks.

  14. avatar Rem May 22nd, 2006 8:11 am

    Same here… Would be so cool to find out a fix on the “No Results” issue.

  15. I can’t really help unless someone could volunteer to let me work with them to do some testing. Off the top of my head I have no idea what could be wrong but I know I could figure it out if I could actually test a non-working site.

  16. Rem pointed out that the issue seems to be whether or not you have permalinks activated. I’m looking into why and I’ll update here when I figure it out.

  17. Cool plugin. Much faster than the one I’m currently using. How about adding a “more results…” to the bottom if there are more than ten?

  18. Also - what should the default search tag look like? I have long since changed it - I tried copying the line over from a default theme but got a bunch of errors.

  19. Okay, nevermind I got it properly inserted into my page, but now it just displays “no results…” even if I haven’t typed anything…
    If you care to work on it IM me (aim:gthing32)

    Hi John,

    Thanks for giving this out of the box plugin. I would like to say here “I have tried almost all available “livesearch” plugins. But none of those worked at my place.

    I wanted to ask you “how to improve search accuracy?”

    Please advice.

  21. To improve search accuracy you would have to add a full text index on the database and then change all the search queries.

  22. This plugin was exactly what I needed. I’ve been looking for this for a while now. Thank you very much!

  25. Hey there,

    VERY cool plugin. Usin’ it. Lovin’ it.

    Unrelated question: I’ve seen this little “ribbon” that you have (showcasing “Rails” day) on quite a few sites…is that a plugin too?

    Thanks,
    Brian

  26. Brian,
    It’s available on the Rails Day website.

  27. John,

    Rad thanks. Say, to take a step backwards…last night the live search plugin was working TENACIOUSLY on my site.

    Today it is exhibiting the oddest behavior. I’ll type “car” into the search, which I KNOW has results…and it will instantly turn up some results. I can then clear the search out, switch over to other applications and do stuff for a while…then come back and WITHOUT refreshing the browser, type “car” or something else that I know will turn up results…and I just get nothing. Not “no results” - just NOTHING. Like the plugin went deaf. If I wait another 30 seconds or so and type in “car” again…I DO get results!

    This behavior has been exhibited on Safari/Firefox on OSX and IE/Firefox on a PC in two different locations. Any ideas of what’s going on?

    Thanks,
    Brian

  28. Hey there,

    One more update. I narrowed it down. The Live Search Plugin does NOT work when posts of mine have embedded YouTube videos in them! Interesting.

  31. Hey John, nice job on this plugin. Fairy lightweight and the fact that it drops into any WP template makes it the best choice IMO. However, maybe you could check out my page in IE6+. THe search is towards the bottom of the page. There are about 10 extra pixels bumping the content down. I may be too worn to notice the cause of the error.

  32. Congratulations, great plugin.

    Hey, John,

    First off I just want to say i love your plugin. Now im working on stylign it a bit and making it fit into my theme a bit better. One of the main things im working on is instead of having it display below the search form, it displays in a positioned div that pops over my content, kinda like http://sis.slowli.com/ . Now i want to be able to put in a close button to close the div and clear the search, but im more of a novice at coding, especially with javascript - more of a stylist, and i was wondering if you knew of a way to do this, or if u could help me get it started

    Thanks for the awsum program and i hope u might be able to help,

    The “no results” problem mentioned above is definatly a permalink problem. I installed it out of the box and re-included the default searchform so that the plugin would work. I had the “no results” message consistantly no matter what I searched for. I did a little bit of trouble shooting and nothing untill I discontinued my custom permalinks and activated the “Default” permalink structure - it worked perfectly. I plan to experiment with other structures and see if I can find out exactly what the cause is. I’ll keep you updated if I notice anything relavent.

    Definatly an awesome plug, great job. It’s worth keeping a default permalink structure untill someone finds a fix for it.

  38. avatar rob August 17th, 2006 4:23 pm

    UPDATE: I’ve started running into the same problem as Brian (comment #23). I get nothing more often than something. I cant seem the notice any sort of pattern other than that if I re-activate the plugin it works first time every time but shortly there-after stops working (seemingly) untill it feels like it.

  39. Thanks Rob. I haven’t had time to look into it. I’ll do the same when I get time.

    What could be wrong?

  49. Hi! This plugin is great! Unfortunately, it isn’t working as it should on my site. If I do a search, it will find the results and create the links - but it won’t show them, unless I first press the search button and then searchs again at the search results page.

    This problem seems to be IE only, it works just fine with Opera.

    Any ideas on how to solve this prob?

    Thanks!

  50. @Troels - You have several javascript plugins installed. Most likely there is some kind of conflict. The plugin I created uses prototype and I saw that you were using another that did as well. You could try removing the <script> tag that includes prototype in my plugin or disabling some of the other plugins that include javascripts.

  51. Hi

    great plugin. Is there any way to cap/limit the number of results returned?

    Thanks

  54. @mami - It seems as though it is more often not working when permalinks are off rather than customized. Mine are customized and work fine.

  55. Thanks. Did the trick, although I think it would have looked better if I’d truncated the results but I’ll stick with the fewer posts.

  75. Hi.

    Great plugin. Thanks :)

    I am using the plugin for a small WP based portal but looks like the plugin has mysteriously ’stopped working’ after a day. I fiddled around with the permalinks as suggested, but it hasnt solved the issue. The test site is http://www.inkriti.net/wp1/

    I am using WP 2.0.6 - and the plugin worked well for a day before it quit functioning. The plugins enabled are the livesearch, bbpress integration, static front page, wp-dtree and tiger style administration. The same plugin works with the exact SAME setup on a different machine so i doubt that its a javascript conflict. wp-dtree needs prototype for special effects but we have disabled scriptalicious - so no effects for the tree other than the default it came with.

    Would appreciate any help / pointers.

  76. @Pushkar - The site won’t come up for me. I’m betting it’s a javascript conflict. Try disabling the other plugins and see if it works then. That is the most common problem.

  92. Hi John,

    Can you check and tell me, how do I fix search result box on my site.

    DG…
    http://www.ditii.com

  93. @DG - You have prototype included twice. Once in my plugin and once another time. That is probably causing the issues.

  94. John,

    WordPress 2.1.X includes prototype.js, so I’ve set the path of Livesearch plugin, and another one using prototype.js to wp-includes/js/prototype.js. But still the search box is not clear.

    I’ve also made changes in livesearch CSS file to read the div#addicted-results, as div#addicted_results.

    And finally entered ul id=”#addicted_results” in search_results.php.

    Even though, the search box is not coming clear.

    DG…
    http://www.ditii.com

  95. DG, It’s a style sheet problem. One solution is to make an overlay, then you need to add a z-index: 2; (or something higher) and a position: absolute; attribute.

  96. John, Here is what I’ve entered in livesearch CSS:

    /* live search styles */
    div#addicted_results {
    position: absolute;
    z-index: 5;
    float: left;
    width: auto;
    height: auto;
    padding: 2px;
    right: 22px;
    }
    div#addicted_results ul {
    color: #F60;
    background-color: #e4a9a9;
    width: 100%;
    border: 2px solid #c43b3b;
    filter: alpha(opacity=60);
    -moz-opacity: .60;
    opacity: .60;
    font-size: 1em;
    font-color: #ffffff;
    line-height: 2em;
    text-align: center;
    }
    div#addicted_results li { list-style-type: square; }
    div#addicted_results a { color: #F60; font-weight: bold; }
    div#addicted_results a:hover {}

    Can you tweak it, to let me have more clear visibility.

    As I can’t change its own css file as that would affect all other blogs, I have to put my styles into the general style file. Thsi works out hust fine, but I am left with a kind of stupid question, but I am unsure where to change this:

  110. @kathy - get_header is a wordpress template function that spits out the header.php file in your theme. For some reason, the file that has that function in it is not being included. My guess is that there is a path issue. Maybe the plugin doesn’t work if your site is at domain.com/blog instead of domain.com. I can try to look at it but it might be a bit as I’m pretty swamped.

  111. it was working fine, and all of a sudden it stopped :(
    i dont know where the bug could be or I could have a look at it myself…

  121. Installed this plug-in, works great as per specification.

    I would like to customize the search so that the search happens only on the title rather than the body contents,
    How could i do this?

  122. @Ravi - You would have to edit the plugin to customize functionality. If you just want to customize look and feel then use css. The div that wraps the ul, li and a tags is named div#addicted-results.

    Love this…How can I display more than 10 results at a time? Thanks in advance!

  124. @holly - You would have to customize the plugin.

  125. Hi John,

    Great plugin :) I put the search form in the inner pages and it was working fine in our site.

    However, after installing ultimate tag warrior plugin, i’ve encountered some problems. It’s not searching properly now. It doesn’t show all posts with the searched keyword, for e.g. i typed the phrase (flying v), it only shows one post http://www.inboundpass.com/2006/12/31/jru-posts-back-to-back-win/ not even the post in the frontpage in the Preseason News http://www.inboundpass.com/2007/06/13/green-archers-win-flying-v-preseaon-title-ue-grabs-3rd/ and others.

    What do you think is the problem?

    Hope to hear from you. Thanks.

    just been working on a new site and had the plugin working great, but all of a sudden, it stopped and just displays: no results….

    if you need it, I coudl give you a temporary admin account…
    site is here: http://www.rondul.eu

  127. hello,

    i would like to show only 5 or 6 words auf a result.
    Atm the search returns the whole name of an post. I would like to have it like this way.

    “result of the search …”

    still as an hyperlink, but shortened with the dots at the end.

    is that possible?

    regards

    chris

  128. Great plugin. I added code to handle keypresses like cursor up/down and ESC on my site, if anybody is interested to get a live search which feels like Apple’s Spotlight.

  129. Hi,
    Thanks for a great plugin! I like it very much and been using it on my blog a long time now.
    Recently I’ve been having some troubles with it though - using it togheter with Lightbox plugin it causes a JavaScript error.
    I think it might be because of both plugins loading their own prototype.js but commenting out the rows in either plugin dosen’t help.

    Any ideas how to solve this??

  130. Simpy great! Thanks!

  131. This is a great plugins. This type of is priceless for the new kid on the block.

    Thanks

    Vic

  132. Awesome! Worked great for me. Thanks a ton.

    oh and btw, the newest version of WP already uses prototype, so actually my blog loads 2x prototype once for your plugin and once gets loaded by default by wp… could you try and make your plugin compatible with the wp

  135. Hi, my name is Gabriel and I’m the admin of http://www.ninioromantico.com.ar

    Your plugin does not check if prototype is already loaded by WP. So it gets loaded twice. I’d recommend something like this:

    if (function_exists(’wp_enqueue_script’)) {
    wp_enqueue_script(’prototype’);
    }
    else
    {
    echo ” . “\n”;

    }

    this is a great plugin but I found two bugs .
    first is when you type an apostrophe I get this error
    “WordPress database error: [You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '' GROUP BY ID ORDER BY post_date DESC LIMIT 0, 10' at line 1]”

    and the second bug is when you post with “post timestamp”, the post that it should apear later is found in the search and is not supposed to happen.

    Solution for the “No Results..” Error

    The problem occurs when the permalink structure is set to Custom /%category%/%postname%/

    Something to do with the category tag, seems to work with something like /%post_id%/%category%/%postname%/ or
    /%post_id%/%postname%/

    I’m using the Wordpress 2.3
